Larry D. Burrows

Larry D. Burrows, 73, of Sumner, died unexpectedly on Sunday, May 11, 2014, while working at the Kuethe Turkey Farm.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 16, 2014, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner.  Interment will follow at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Sumner.  Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 15th at St. John Lutheran Church and for one hour preceding services at the church on Friday. Memorials may be given in his name to the Sumner-Fredericksburg Schools for a scholarship fund that will be established.  Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner is assisting the family.

Larry Duane, son of Clarence and Jeannette McNamee Burrows, was born November 7, 1940, at Geneseo, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed as an adult at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner in October of 1988.  Larry attended Geneseo School s until 6th grade when the family moved to New Hartford. He graduated from New Hartford High School in 1959.  On June 14, 1963, he was united in marriage with Wanda Adams at New Hartford. After graduating from Upper Iowa University in Fayette in 1963, he began a teaching career at Sumner Schools that lasted thirty-eight years, retiring in 2001. He taught upper elementary school, started the girls basketball and softball programs, and also coached junior high basketball. Larry played for the Sumner Cubs amateur baseball team, and enjoyed many outdoor activities. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church where he served on the cemetery board.

Larry was a great outdoorsman. He loved to fish, hunt, and gather nuts. He enjoyed feeding the birds and squirrels in his backyard. He was a loving and devoted husband, dad, and grandpa. He and Wanda rarely missed an event of their grandchildren and he loved spending time with them. Whether it was attending sports events or playing games, reading to them or fishing, the grandchildren had his undivided attention. He never asked anything from the grandkids, but to be the best they can be.

Larry loved to teach. He put his heart and soul into helping kids learn. He created projects he thought would make them think. He enjoyed every minute he spent with the kids in and out of the classroom.

Many will remember Larry for his baking. He took cookies to friends and family and had kids stop by the house asking for cookies.

Family was important to Larry. Larry was the quiet one and Wanda more outspoken. That shined through at the grandkid events where Larry would sit quietly away from loud, cheering Wanda. He will be missed so much by everyone.

In addition to his wife, Wanda of Sumner, he is survived by two sons, Steve (Heather) Burrows of Sumner and Bob (Catherine) of Bondurant; six grandchildren, Mitchell, Chelsea, Jordan, Shawn, Bobbie Jo, and Ashley; one brother, Dale (Mary Beth) Burrows of Texas; three sisters, Donna (Paul) Lindemann of Dysart, Mary (Kenny) Oldenburger of Parkersburg, and Cheryl (Steve) Hosper of Melbourne, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, James.

Sorry for the loss to the family of Larry. I didn't know Larry that well as I was a freshman at Upper Iowa in 1963. He played basketball there and helped me and others adapt to college life and college basketball. He was always friendly and had a calming influence on us freshmen. He had a nice smile and joked with us in good clean fun. I remember him well.

Oh the sadness mixed with the memories of Mr. Burrows ( I still think of him as that not Larry). Sixth grade at the Junior High was an experience. He knew our sign language and that the word formaldehyde would end the spelling bee as we couldn't seem to figure it out.
I also remember him pitching for us at recess. I hit a line drive right into him one time and was afraid I had hurt him and/or would be in trouble. He takes the ball and throws me out instead.
He was a terrific person and will be missed by so many. My deepest sympathy to you all.

It's impossible to ponder memories of elementary school without images of the Dynamic Durant Duo (Mr. Burrows and Mr. Frisch) dominating those thoughts. Memories of Mr. Burrows' passion and dedication accompanied me when I went back to school to become a teacher. I cross my fingers to one day inherit a middle school science classroom where I can only hope to have half the impact on student lives that Larry had. More importantly was his passion and dedication to all things outside the classroom as well. My sincerest sympathies to the entire Burrows family and may God comfort you during this time of loss.
Bless you Mr. Burrows.

My heart is so sad to hear of this news. I don’t know if there are any words that can help ease the pain of your loss right now. Know that you are surrounded by family, friends and a community that love you and loved him and will help you through this difficult time. Mr Burrows was one of those teachers you will never forget. He was such a positive and kind person both inside and outside of the classroom. Some of my best memories in elementary school are from his classroom. Who knew a musical girl could love Science so much? Here is a poem that pretty much sums it up:

God Made Teachers
Author Unknown
God understood our thirst for knowledge, and our need to be led by someone wiser; He needed a heart of compassion, of encouragement, and patience;
Someone who would accept the challenge regardless of the opposition;
Someone who could see potential and believe in the best in others….
So He made teachers (and he made Mr Burrows!)

Mr. Burrows was one of those people you 'hope' that you will meet and get to spend time with while on this Earth. Those of us that moved through the Sumner school system were among the lucky few. My best memory of Mr. Burrows was a discussion we had in class one day that I have never forgotten. We were experimenting with ways to improve our senses, somewhere I found in a book that wetting your nose would increase a person's ability to smell things better. The look on Mr. Burrow's face was priceless and I'm sure the funny moment in the teachers lounge for days to come. His lesson that day was, just because it's printed, does not mean it's true. I enjoyed basketball with Mr. Burrows and have the utmost respect for him and even today would never call him Larry. My deepest sympathies to Wanda, Steve and Bob.

Wanda and family: So many have mentioned what a great teacher Larry was. I was one of the very lucky few who had him for the first year he taught in the sixth grade at Sumner. I remember enjoying his class and his smile. I also remember that it was very unusual to have a male teacher in grade school. I recall the day that President Kennedy was shot and how he shared that with only a few of us at first. It is apparent that the smile remained throughout his life! I only hope that knowing how many lives he touched and made better by his mere presence will help you deal with the grief of losing him. His was truly a life well-lived.

I read many comments posted and it seems I'm not the only one who still uses Mr. Burrows instead of Larry. I guess that says a lot about the impact he made on so many young people who passed through his classroom.
I remember a project we did I'm his class trying to put 1000 things in one spot. Our class chose paper punches & the other class chose kernels of corn. To this day, 21 years later, I still think about that every time I empty a three-hole paper puncher.
I've run into him over the years at various sports events and he never forgot who I was. I don't think I was a standout student, I've always just thought he cared for his students and remembered us all in one way or another. I'm grateful I was one of them, because I too remember the day I finally got to see the stars under the dome in his room. I can still find consultations because of his science class.
Thoughts and prayers for everyone in this confusing and sad time. Anyone who crossed his path was lucky to have met him.
John 3:16~ For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten son for whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
God speed.

Mr. Burrows was one of the best teachers I have ever had. In those pages we also wrote notes to each other about the Gulf War, which made me very fearful and sad. Because of his outdoor nature lab, I became convinced to become a natural scientist...at least until high school. Ultimately, instead, I read a lot of science fiction and am now a college educator.

He will be a greatly missed man, he was one of the best school teachers a child could ask for! I was very shocked by the news! Now I am sure him and Mr. Lowell Frisch are having a good time reuniting!

So very sad to hear of Larry's passing. We just talked on Wednesday what tomatoes to buy for the best salsa. I will miss that awesome smile he had. He has touched many, many lives!

Wanda, Steve, Bob and families -
My deepest condolences. I just found out and am shocked and surprised. Larry was truly one of the very best of men both personally and professionally. He touched so many lives and left big impressions on so many of us. I have so many memories of my grade school days in his and Lowell Frisch's teasing. There was the piped in sunshine, walking slanted and I can't forget the time I broke the big thermometer. Larry was probably one of my most influential teachers in my life. You will find as my family has that keeping all of these happy memories alive are what make the days easier to get through. Your family will be in my prayers in the days to come and know that God has you in His arms.

Wanda and Family, I was just so shocked and saddened by the news of Larry's passing. I, like many, many others, will miss him so much. He was such an inspiration to me, especially when we discussed our rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. He was like the energizer bunny that just kept on going, even when he was hurting. My deepest sympathy to all of you at this most difficult time. Blessings to each of you and may all the memories you made with Larry sustain you now and for days and years to come.
